Caught early
Auto Glass Repair
A rock chip caught early is usually a repair. Left alone, it becomes a replacement, sometimes within hours.
Chapter 01
How fast a chip becomes a crack
Construction debris on 635, gravel off a truck on Belt Line or the President George Bush Turnpike, and you have a star chip the size of a fingernail. It looks like nothing.
Then the temperature swings, which in North Texas it does hard and often, the glass expands and contracts around the damage, and the chip runs. A crack can travel halfway across a windshield in a matter of days, sometimes hours. Cold air on a hot windshield is a common trigger.

What a repair involves
We clean the damage out, draw the air from the break under vacuum and inject resin into the void, then cure it so the resin bonds to the glass. That restores most of the structural integrity and stops the crack spreading.
A repaired chip is normally still faintly visible on close inspection. It should not distract you while driving, and it costs a fraction of replacing the whole windshield.
Chapter 03
Do not wait on this one
Of all the work in the shop, glass is the one where a week of delay genuinely changes the price. A chip is a repair. The crack it becomes is a windshield.
