Chapter 01
Why they go yellow in Texas
Headlight lenses stopped being glass a long time ago. They are polycarbonate with a protective coating on the outside, and ultraviolet light breaks that coating down. Under our sun it happens faster than most places.
Once the coating fails, the plastic underneath oxidizes. That is the yellow, chalky haze. It scatters the light your headlights produce instead of letting it through, so you can be running perfectly good bulbs and still not see far enough down an unlit road.

Sanding back and resealing
Restoring them properly means wet sanding the oxidized layer off through progressively finer grades, polishing the lens back to clarity, and then sealing it with a fresh ultraviolet protective coating.
That last step is the one the parts store kits leave out, and it is the whole difference. A polish with no new coating looks excellent for a couple of months and then hazes over again, usually worse than before, because the remaining factory protection has been sanded away.
Chapter 03
It is a safety job
We treat this as a visibility repair rather than a detailing extra. If you have noticed yourself slowing down on dark roads, or oncoming drivers flashing you, cloudy lenses are worth ruling out.
