After the hail: when dents come out without paint, and when they do not

A bad ten minutes of hail leaves a car covered in dimples, and most of the time the paint is completely untouched.

After the hail: when dents come out without paint, and when they do not

Storms roll across the Dallas area every spring and summer, and the aftermath is always the same. Parking lots full of vehicles with roofs, hoods and trunk lids covered in shallow round dimples, and owners assuming they are looking at an expensive repaint.

Usually they are not, and the reason is worth understanding, because it changes both the price and how long you are without the car.

Hail dents the metal without breaking the paint

Hail arrives as a blunt impact spread over a small area. Modern automotive paint is more flexible than people assume, so in the majority of hail strikes the panel deforms underneath while the paint film stretches and stays intact.

That leaves you with a specific situation: damaged shape, undamaged finish. If the shape can be corrected without disturbing the finish, there is no reason to repaint anything.

What paintless dent repair actually is

A technician gets access to the back of the panel, reaching in through the trunk, a door panel, a window aperture or the engine bay, and works the metal back to shape with purpose made rods and tips.

It is done by feel and by eye. A light board or a reflected line is held across the panel, and the technician watches how that line bends as pressure is applied from behind. When the reflection runs straight again, the dent is out.

Nothing is sanded. Nothing is filled. Nothing is sprayed.

Why that matters more than it sounds

  • Your factory paint stays on the car, and factory paint is better than anything applied afterward
  • There is no color to match, so there is no risk of a mismatched panel
  • There is no paint to cure, so the car is not waiting days for a booth
  • It usually costs less than a conventional repair
  • The car keeps its original finish, which matters when you sell it

The last point gets overlooked. A car that has never been repainted is worth more than one that has, and paintless repair keeps that intact.

When it will not work

Paintless dent repair has real limits, and any shop that tells you otherwise is selling rather than assessing.

  • The paint is cracked, chipped through or flaking at the dent
  • The metal has been stretched, which happens with a sharp or deep impact
  • There is a hard crease rather than a rounded dimple
  • The dent sits on a body line or a panel edge where the metal is doubled or braced
  • There is no access to the back of the panel

In those cases the honest answer is conventional bodywork and paint. We would rather say that at the estimate than start a paintless repair and abandon it halfway.

Door dings are the same job

The other half of this work has nothing to do with weather. Somebody opened a door into yours at the Firewheel Town Center lot, or a cart rolled across a slope and caught your rear quarter. Same situation, same technique, usually a quick job.

A note on the hail chasers

After a big storm, operations appear in parking lots offering immediate hail repair from a trailer. Some are competent. Some are gone by the time you notice the work has not held, and the warranty goes with them.

The advantage of a shop with an address is not sentimental. It is that if something is not right in six months, there is a building to go back to. Ours is at 3578 Forest Ln in Garland and has been since 2010.

What the estimate actually looks at

A hail estimate is mostly counting. The car goes under strong even light, and each panel is assessed for how many dents it carries, how big they are and where they sit. A roof with forty shallow dimples in open metal is a different job from a hood with twelve dents sitting along a body line, even though the second car looks less dramatic in a photograph.

Location drives the price more than quantity does. Open flat areas in the middle of a panel are the most straightforward. Dents near an edge, on a curved crown, or over an internal brace take considerably longer, because the metal there is stiffer and access from behind is restricted.

This is also the point where mixed damage gets sorted out. It is common for a hail damaged car to have most panels suitable for paintless work and one or two that are not, and there is nothing wrong with doing both on the same car. The roof comes out from behind while a single cracked spot on the hood gets conventional treatment.

How long you will be without it

Because there is no paint to cure, timescales are driven by labor rather than by drying. A moderately damaged car is often a same week job. A severely dimpled roof, hood and trunk can run longer, since interior trim and sometimes the headliner has to come out to reach the back of the panel.

We will give you a real timeline at the estimate rather than an optimistic one, and if trim has to be removed we will say so up front, because that is the part that turns a quick job into a longer one.
