Cloudy headlights are a visibility problem before they are a looks problem

Almost every car more than about seven years old has them: headlight lenses that have gone from clear to a cloudy, chalky yellow. Most owners treat it as a cosmetic annoyance, somewhere below a dent in the priority list.

It is worth moving up that list, because the effect is on how far you can see at night.

Why they go yellow

Headlight lenses stopped being glass decades ago. They are polycarbonate, which is light, tough and far less likely to shatter into the cabin. Its one weakness is ultraviolet light, so from the factory every lens carries a thin protective coating on the outer surface.

That coating is a consumable. Ultraviolet exposure degrades it, and heat cycling, road grit and detergents all help it along. Under Texas sun it fails faster than in most of the country, particularly on cars that sit outside all day.

Once the coating is gone the polycarbonate itself is exposed, and it oxidizes. The yellow chalky haze is that oxidation layer, on the outside of the lens, sitting directly in the path of your headlights.

What that does to your lights

A headlight is an optical system. The bulb produces light, and the reflector and lens are shaped to put that light where it is useful, which means far enough down the road with a controlled cut off so you do not blind oncoming drivers.

A hazed lens scatters the beam. Instead of a defined pattern reaching down the road, some of that light diffuses in every direction. The practical consequences are consistent.

  • Less light reaching the distance, so less reaction time on unlit roads
  • A softer beam cut off, which scatters light upward and dazzles oncoming drivers
  • More glare back into your own eyes in rain or fog
  • A yellower cast, because oxidation absorbs the blue end of the spectrum

Fitting brighter bulbs behind a hazed lens does not fix it. It puts more light into the same scattering surface and generally makes the glare worse for everyone else.

Why the parts store kit disappoints

The kits work, briefly. They contain abrasives to cut the oxidation off and a polish to bring the surface back to clarity, and the result on the afternoon you do it is genuinely impressive.

What they mostly do not include is a durable replacement for the ultraviolet coating you have just sanded away, and that coating is the entire reason the lens lasted as long as it did. Bare polished polycarbonate with no protection oxidizes again quickly, often within a few months, and frequently worse than before because the last of the factory protection has gone.

What a proper restoration is

The sequence matters more than any single step.

  • Wet sand the oxidized layer off through progressively finer grades
  • Polish the lens back to genuine optical clarity
  • Clean and prepare the surface thoroughly
  • Apply a fresh ultraviolet protective coating and let it cure

That last step is what makes it last rather than look good for a season. It is also the step that separates a restoration from a detail.

When to bother

If you have noticed yourself slowing down on dark roads, or oncoming drivers flashing you when your lights are correctly aimed, cloudy lenses are worth ruling out before you spend money on bulbs.

Haze on the outside, and haze on the inside

Almost all of this is external oxidation, and that is the good news, because external damage can be sanded off and resealed. It is worth checking which one you have before spending money.

Run a wet finger or a damp cloth over the lens. If the cloudiness clears momentarily while the surface is wet and returns as it dries, the problem is on the outside and is a straightforward restoration. If it looks the same wet or dry, the haze may be on the inside of the housing.

Internal fogging usually means moisture is getting in past a failed seal or a cracked housing, and no amount of external work will touch it. That is a housing repair or replacement, and we will tell you which you are looking at rather than polishing the outside of a lens that was never the problem.

How long a proper restoration lasts

With a genuine ultraviolet coating applied over a properly prepared lens, you should expect years rather than months. It is not permanent, because nothing exposed to this much sun is permanent, but it is on the same order as the factory coating it replaces.

You can help it along. Parking in shade where possible is the single biggest factor, and washing the lenses along with the rest of the car keeps road film from etching in. Avoid aggressive solvents and abrasive polishes on the lens after it has been coated, because those cut straight through the new protection.
